Bookkeeping Services in Sussex County, NJ
Looking for a bookkeeper in Sussex County who actually explains your numbers? I’m Shawn Kuehn, a QuickBooks Certified ProAdvisor in Hopatcong, and I do small business bookkeeping across Sussex County, NJ for owners who are done guessing what their bank balance means. Every transaction categorized, every account reconciled, and monthly financials delivered with a plain-English walkthrough, so the numbers tell you something before the bank does.
I spent 26 years inside a family building-materials business, most of it running the company, so I know what it feels like to do the books at midnight and still not know where you stand. That is the problem I fix, and here is exactly how I do it for businesses in this county.
Bookkeeping Built for a Seasonal County
Sussex County businesses run on seasons more than most. The marinas, landscapers, dock builders and restaurants around Lake Hopatcong make their year between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The ski and resort trade in Vernon makes it between December and March. Farms in the northwest of the county, HVAC and plumbing shops in Sparta and Newton, and the contractors working the lake communities all see the same shape: a few strong months fill the account, and then it quietly drains.
That shape is exactly where guessing goes wrong. A summer bank balance looks like an answer. It is not. It is summer’s money, and some of it already belongs to October, January and the tax bill. Clean monthly books show you what is actually yours, so a good season becomes a cushion instead of a surprise. That is the whole point of doing the books every month instead of once a year in a panic.
Sussex County Bookkeeping Services
Monthly Bookkeeping
The core service: every transaction categorized, every bank and credit card account reconciled, and monthly financial statements delivered with a plain-English review of what moved and why. One predictable monthly price. Cleanup and catch-up projects are scoped separately, so the number never surprises you. See what monthly bookkeeping includes. Prices are published, no call required: bookkeeping pricing.
QuickBooks Cleanup & Catch-Up
Books a mess, or months behind after a busy season? Both are fixable faster than you would think. I untangle duplicate transactions, unreconciled accounts and a chart of accounts that tells you nothing, or rebuild the record from your bank statements forward. Most cleanups finish inside 30 days. How QuickBooks cleanup works and the catch-up process, step by step.
Bank & Credit Card Reconciliation
Every account reconciled every month, so the books match reality. It is the unglamorous foundation of every number you will ever trust. Included in monthly bookkeeping, and here is my step-by-step QuickBooks Online reconciliation guide if you do your own.
Tax-Ready Books for Your CPA
I do not file your taxes. I make your CPA’s job easy and their invoice smaller, with clean, reconciled books handed off with everything they need. If you already have an accountant in Newton, Sparta or anywhere else, I work alongside them. What tax-ready means and how CPAs work with me.
Bookkeeping Health Check
Not sure what state your books are actually in? A quick look at your QuickBooks file tells us both: what is solid, what is off, and what it would take to fix. It is the first step of every engagement. How the free health check works.
Where I Work in Sussex County
I am based in Hopatcong, and most of my work is in Hopatcong, Sparta and Newton. In Hopatcong that means the businesses along Lakeside Avenue and Hopatchung Road, with a few tucked into the residential hills: the auto repair and body shops, the restaurants and bars on the lake, and the marinas that keep the boats running. Landing, Byram, Stanhope, Andover, Hampton Township, Stillwater, Franklin, Ogdensburg, Hamburg, Lafayette and Vernon get the same service, because the books run in QuickBooks Online with secure bank feeds and nothing depends on distance.
When it helps to sit down together, I will come to your shop, or we can meet at the Dunkin’ in Hopatcong. On a nice day, Maxim Glen or Modick Park, both in Hopatcong, works even better. Most clients switch to a short monthly video call over their actual financials once the books are in shape, because it is quicker than a drive up Route 206.
Sparta is the town I lived in before Hopatcong, so I know it well. The businesses run along Route 15, Sparta Avenue and Main Street, with Lake Mohawk at the center of it. If you want to meet there, Casa Mia in Lake Mohawk is my favorite spot and I would recommend it to anyone. Park across the street in the big country club lot; it saves you circling.
Newton is the county seat, so the downtown along Spring Street carries the courthouse and professional crowd alongside the shops and restaurants. The biggest change since I lived nearby is the Stop & Shop area on the way in. That was a field when I left. For a working meeting, Chun Bo is still my pick, ideally over the volcano steak.
My clients are the businesses that keep this part of the county running: trades and service companies, family businesses, the shops and restaurants around the lake. Here is what one client says on Google: “Shawn has been instrumental to my company. Did an amazing job reorganizing my books and keeping them up to date.”
Outside the county? The same service covers all of New Jersey.
Who This Isn’t For
Honesty saves us both a call. If you are looking for someone to file your tax returns, that is a CPA or an EA. I prepare the books they file from, and I will happily work alongside yours. And if you want the cheapest possible data entry with no explanation attached, there are offshore services that cost less than I do. My clients want to understand their numbers, not just have them typed in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you only work with businesses near Hopatcong?
No. Hopatcong is home, and Lake Hopatcong businesses are the closest, but I keep books for owners across Sussex County and the rest of New Jersey. Everything runs in QuickBooks Online, so a client in Vernon or Montague gets the same monthly rhythm as one in Landing.
My business makes most of its money in the summer. How does bookkeeping help with the winter?
By showing you, month by month, how much of the summer money is actually yours to keep. Clean books separate what is earned from what is already spoken for, so you can set aside a cushion while the money is there instead of finding out in January that it is gone.
Do I have to switch to QuickBooks Online?
Every client I work with runs QuickBooks Online. If you are on spreadsheets, QuickBooks Desktop or a shoebox, I handle the move as part of setup, and the monthly close afterward is faster than whatever you are doing now.
Can we meet in person?
Yes. If you are in Sussex County I am glad to meet at your shop or somewhere local. Most clients switch to a short monthly video call once the books are in shape, because it is quicker for both of us.
Ready for Books You Can Trust?
One conversation. No pressure. We will look at where your books stand and what it would take to get them working for you, and if I am not the right fit, I will say so and point you in a better direction.
